ENTHUSIASM: A CRITICAL FACTOR FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE

INTRODUCTION

Enthusiasm is defined as a feeling of excitement. It is to be overflowing with eager enjoyment or approval; it is a lively interest. The word enthusiasm originates from the Greek word entheos, meaning to be inspired or possessed by a god.

From the definition above, it is clear that only Christians who are possessed or full of the Holy Spirit can be enthusiastic. This is what we see in the Acts of the Apostles after the Holy Spirit came upon and filled the about one hundred and twenty disciples at the Upper Room. They left their prayer room full of enthusiasm about Jesus, and went out to practice their Christianity with enthusiastic zeal.

Enthusiasm is a most important tonic for success in any endeavour of life. We cannot succeed in what we do until we become enthusiastic about it. Our enthusiasm about what we are doing becomes infectious and makes others to follow us and invest in us.

ANCHOR SCRIPTURES

Eccl. 9:10; Deut. 28:47-48 (NLT); Acts 18:25 (NLT); I Pet. 4:10-11

Hag. 1:4 (MSG) "How is it that it's the 'right time' for you to live in your fine new homes while the Home, GOD's Temple, is in ruins?"

2 Cor. 9:2 (MSG) “I know you're on board and ready to go. I've been bragging about you all through Macedonia province, telling them, "Achaia province has been ready to go on this since last year." Your enthusiasm by now has spread to most of them.”

Eph. 6:7 (MSG) “And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you're really serving God.”

A. DEFINITIONS OF ENTHUSIASM

1. Strong excitement about something.

2. A strong feeling of active interest in something you like or enjoy.

3. Enthusiasm is a passionate devotion to or interest in a cause or subject. The Greek root word is “entheos” meaning “having the god within”.

4. Therefore enthusiasm literally means “to be inspired or possessed by a god.” – possessed and driven by something bigger than you.

5. A burning desire based on definiteness of purpose.

6. Enthusiasm is a combination of interest, zeal and excitement.

B. THE POWER AND MISSION OF ENTHUSIASM

1. Enthusiasm is to humans what electricity is to industries.

2. It is the electricity of life. Life can only go on as long as one has some measure of enthusiasm. When enthusiasm ebbs, life fades.

3. Life without enthusiasm is life without fire.

4. No one ever succeeds in a project he or she is not enthusiastic about.

5. Many failures in life, marriage, ministry, evangelism and business are traceable to lack of enthusiasm.

6. It is the sustaining power of all great steps and actions.

7. Enthusiasm is the force that propels great achievements.

8. It is the decisive element in the formula for success in business, career, ministry, evangelism and even in marriage.

9. Enthusiasm is superior to talent, for without it, talent turns into torment.

10 Enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world. It beats money, power and influence.

11. Enthusiasm is the fuel that gets the engine of success running at optimum rate.

12. Sometimes people patronize or respond more to an enthusiastic marketer than the actual product itself.

13. Enthusiasm is the force that energizes you and draw people to you.

14. Enthusiasm is not excitement, for excitement is only a by- product of enthusiasm.

15. It is the dividing line between achievers and failures.

16. Henry Truman, the 33rd US president said: I have studied the lives of great men and women, and I found that the ones who got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand with everything they had of energy and enthusiasm.

17. Henry Ford (1853-1947), the maker of the Ford brand of cars said: You can do anything, if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hope rise to the stars. With it there is accomplishment; without it, there are only alibis and excuses.

18. Enthusiasm is the catalyst and mother of success.
